A Beginner’s Guide To Painting Your Kitchen Cabinets
If you’re looking to spruce up your kitchen over the weekend, giving your cabinets a fresh coat of paint is a great place to start. Cabinets are striking elements of kitchen décor, and their appearance can easily change the aesthetic of your kitchen. At the same time, focusing your revamping efforts on your kitchen cabinets is a much easier and cost-effective means of updating your home.
Unfortunately, if you do not have much experience when it comes to painting, you may find it challenging to paint your cabinets yourself. This makes it vital to learn the fundamental steps required to prepare for and successfully complete a paint application. To educate you on the requirements and process of successfully enhancing your cabinets, Quality Painting has designed a Beginner’s Guide to painting your kitchen cabinets.
Getting Started
Do your research: Before you pop open the primer and paint, do a bit of online research. You can watch some videos on Youtube to educate yourself on the process and techniques to get an even coat of paint on your cabinets. From your research, you will also learn about the tools and supplies required to carry out the job correctly.
Purchase supplies for the job: To successfully paint your kitchen cabinets, you’ll need a few fundamental essentials like 150x180 grit sandpaper, tack cloth, Benjamin Moore Natura primer, Benjamin Moore Advanced Cabinet Paint, a Mohair roller with a tray and a brush, and 3M Blue Masking Tape. You will find these supplies at your local hardware store.
Next Steps
Sand each surface: To remove any old paint and even out the surface of your cabinets, carefully sand each surface where the paint is to be applied. By sanding your cabinets, you also allow the primer to adhere better.
Clean any dust with a tack cloth: Once you’re done sanding, it’s time to clean your cabinets to remove any dirt or debris. Use a tack cloth to effectively clean up all the dust from each surface and achieve a clean even coat of paint.
Apply primer and topcoat: Now that your cabinets are smooth and clean, you can apply a fresh coat of primer. When buying the primer, make sure to opt for a high-quality one like the Benjamin Moore Natura primer. This needs to be done to ensure your paint lasts longer. After the primer dries, you’ll need to sand your cabinets (less vigorously than before) to ensure they have no bumps. Use a clean tack cloth to clean up then add your topcoat.
Advice From The Pros
Don’t rush: Take your time to ensure maximum effectiveness. Go through multiple tutorial videos and ensure you understand the steps you need to follow. Patiently check every surface before priming and painting to avoid uneven or messy results. Allow at least two hours of drying time in between coats of paint.
Be careful: Avoid dropping the cabinet doors or drawers after you paint them. While this seems like a simple thing to avoid, it’s a common mistake many make. To prevent your cabinets from falling and ruining their fresh paint, you can leave them to dry on the floor or try painting one surface at a time.
Label doors and drawers: By doing this, you know where everything goes, and you can avoid fitting the wrong doors and drawers into the wrong cabinets. To ensure your labels don’t get in the way while painting, make sure to add them to the surfaces that you do not plan to paint.
